it's really interesting how datacenters have become the new nuclear waste sites, no community wants either of them anywhere near

and it's not just the obvious massive scale, with lack of any meaningful permanent employment, huge water and energy use, but also they are backed by the most odious corporations and techbros

people get all of this, and are saying LOUDLY - NO WAY!!

Hamilton has put a moratorium on data center developments. This should be the default policy all over Canada - they are wasteful, energy and water sucks, and the output is literally an economic and social timebomb

Hamilton city council approves pause on data centre development | CBC News

@MatWright this should be a ban on AI data centres, not all data centres.

The reality is that too many Canadians and Canadian Businesses keep their data in US based data centres. There should be a push to patriate that data. And, as an added bonus, storage centric data centres use a lot less power.

@evdelen @MatWright

Was thinking the same thing. AI data centres consume roughly 10 times the power (and water) of an old fashioned compute/storage data centre. So the fight should be about AI data centres for all the reasons that have been articulated.

After all, most of are using data centres of some sort simply by posting on here.🤔
