St James’ Church, Sydney, NSW, Australia

Consecrated in 1824, as part of the major construction programme initiated by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, St James’ Church is now the oldest existing church building in the City of Sydney. It has been the venue for many historic events including the enthronement of the first, and only, Bishop of Australia, William Grant Broughton (for whom the church became his cathedral). Through history, St James has been a place of ministry to a diversity of people ranging from the Governor, military personnel and convicts at its beginnings to the great array of people who work and live in the city today and those who come from the wider metropolitan area for Sunday worship.

@douglaswelch A vertical photograph featuring a historic brick building with a tall spire positioned against a backdrop of modern skyscrapers in an urban setting. The central building has three large, dark-tinted arched windows and a pediment containing a white oval plaque. A dark, pointed spire topped with a green cross rises from behind this structure. Behind the historic architecture, several tall skyscrapers rise into the sky, including a prominent white tower with horizontal lines and glass buildings with blue and brown tones. In the foreground, rectangular garden beds filled with pink, white, and purple flowers are arranged in a paved plaza where a few people are walking or standing near cafe tables.
