Why does Valve’s Steam Machine cost $1,049 when a console is half that? Because it isn’t a console.

Consoles launch at a loss and recoup through game sales. Valve says it sells the Steam Machine close to hardware cost, no subsidy. It is also a real compact PC: custom AMD CPU and discrete GPU, 16GB DDR5, NVMe, custom cooling, in a 6-inch cube. Something at today’s memory and SSD prices lands in the same range or higher.
