Americans Are in Denial About Elder Care

Many assume that if they can afford paid help in older age, they won’t need to rely on kin. They’re wrong.

@dyckron Paid help is extraordinarily expensive. My mom needed 24 hour care — it was a LOT.
@wendinoakland it's crazy. Unpaid care and domestic labour in general make the neoliberal-mode economy go 'round.
@dyckron I was managing my mom’s finances and ordering supplies for her while she had ft care. And she had some money saved up, most of which went to her care.

A nice nursing home in Aberdeen is £70K/yr

@wendinoakland @dyckron

The hospital beds are blocked with the elderly waiting for community care.

It is a shambles.

One of the reasons there is push back against voluntary euthanasia is people wanting to leave an inheritance for their loved ones.

@amiserabilist @wendinoakland wow. That's an eye opener. Makes sense according to #NeoliberalParadise logic, unfortunately.
@dyckron I'm not there yet, but I'm at the age I'm watching relatives who are there... and I can't say I don't see the argument for "why would I want my family to burn through all their money just to keep my droolin' ass alive for five more years?" (That said, I would never declare that choice for anyone else - I just want to able to choose my own checkout time, y'know?)
