"We survived the 1976 heatwave". Yes we did, in the same way we survived the covid pandemic - some of us survived to say things like that, the people who died aren't here to disagree. The 1976 heatwave was estimated to have caused 20% extra deaths in the UK compared to the same period in 1975.

Also 1976 was fifty years ago, and the heatwave was so unusual people are still talking about it. Today dangerous heat is more of an "every other Thursday" type event.

@afewbugs Some people survived two world wars. Should we accept a third one? I survived the heatwave of 2003 with nearly 20,000 direct deaths here in France. The already second heatwave of 2026 now is hotter and longer.
These people compare apples and pears. We can't just shrug away more often coming extrem weather by climate change. And that argument of 1976 is pure sarcasm for people e. g. In India with new temperatures of ca 50°C ...

@NatureMC @afewbugs This might be a good moment for me to ask that people spread the word about the need to check on older people, who may not fully understand that the world has changed — and that they, too, have changed and aren’t as heat-tolerant as they used to be.

We have people like that here, and I’d wager you do as well.
