Ranked Choice results in tonight. The Democratic Socialists gob smacked the established Dem party. They got 35 of the 48 seats. That's on top of our candidate winning mayoral primary and a progressive to replace Eleanor Holmes Norton. My ward elected a woman labor leader, and Dem Socialist to represent us on the City Council. First time this generation DC voters had an option and we spoke clearly!

@fulanigirl

i am thrilled at the wins by democratic socialists and that they are lifting up others too.

we need progressives and folks with energy and new ideas, not the same tired, ineffective tripe the core democratic party establishment has been failing with for 40+ years.

@paul_ipv6 absolutely right. I've talked to some voters who are in my age group (old) and they voted for Mayor Bowser's sycophants. They were afraid. Noted the need for change but thought old school could do it even though they hadn't gotten it done before. It was quite surreal talking to them. But it just goes to show we have to keep educating the voters.

@fulanigirl

Corporate Dems are losing to progressives everywhere in these primaries. Keep fighting. We are winning. A better Democratic Party is possible.

@mastodonmigration @fulanigirl
The whole history of the country would be different under ranked choice

Or most anything better than the creaky 1780s Constitution

If they’d written in a “Redraft every fifty years” clause I wonder where we’d be?

@AccordionBruce @mastodonmigration @fulanigirl

There is no voting system in the constitution.

@kevinrns @mastodonmigration @fulanigirl
I suppose the Electoral College is kind of a vote-filtration system

The Constitution did not create a democracy

They never agreed many the people were citizens or even people

@AccordionBruce @kevinrns @mastodonmigration
The Electoral College was established to maintain Southern influence so not so much filtering as it is directing. Our system of government is a republic.

@fulanigirl @AccordionBruce @mastodonmigration

There are many methods to elect in many states. FPTP, Ranked voting and a primary system that might choose two Dems, or any combo, or even acclaimed. New York has a great system.

There are dozens of states passing laws to sideline the "college" forever.

Calling America a republic and not a democracy is what republican subversives say, have said, will say as they cancel voting.

Americans are improving voting everyday, glad you want to help.

@AccordionBruce @mastodonmigration
It might be different and it might not. I definitely saw places where ranked choice could be manipulated, and it doesn't address the problem of funding a campaign. Our candidates pledged to limit campaign contributions to $50 so they were fueled by workers on the ground. I'm not sure how it would have turned out if big $ was on the table. Also how you do your coalitions can impact the ranking. For us it worked. Not sure about all the time.
@fulanigirl The people have spoken. 👊🏾 Hope they are prepared for the obstruction that is surely coming from the federal government.
@venitamathias We are preparing as no doubt it will come.
