Ophiocordyceps is iconic for its ability to infect ants and change their nervous system to force them to climb high, where the fungus can fruit and spread spores to infect more ants.
Pleurocordyceps is a hyperparasitic fungus that eats Ophiocordyceps. It isn't really a friend to the ants, since it has no interest in fully wiping out its host. But it makes for an interesting dynamic, and I continue to think it would make an interesting Alien movie or Last of Us sequel to introduce a hyperparasite to interact with the titular monsters!

A new species from Borneo, Pleurocordyceps cornusynnemata, named for its fruiting bodies looking like little horns, was just described for the first time! https://phys.org/news/2026-06-scientists-hyperparasite-malaysia-borneo-jungle.html

@dantheclamman "The Girl with All the Gifts" covered the neuro-invasive behavior altering fungus thing pretty well imo.
@Infoseepage came into the replies to say that. the book, not the movie. really well done @dantheclamman
@draNgNon @dantheclamman Agreed, the book is the superior work. I wish every day could be a Miss Justineau day.
@draNgNon @dantheclamman Offhand, there is also Upstream Color, which was the sophomore film of Shane Carruth, who did the excellent ultra low budget SciFi film Primer.

@dantheclamman

needs a "body horror" tag

@dantheclamman

I've occasionally seen ants infected by Ophiocordyceps in Singapore. Now I have to see if I can also find Pleurocordyceps. 🙂

@futurebird

@dantheclamman people were...blah blah...*Parasite* (2019)...something something...*Hyperparasite* (sorry I have had half a beer)
@dantheclamman Indeed. What’s a facehugger to the xenomorphs like? 🤔
@dantheclamman Go Up. you are not sure where the thought came from, but you know it is important. more important than anything. now that you think about it, it is imperative that you Go Up, right now. stop what you're doing, Go Up.
