So what does one.... do, on mastodon?
@lyss_lain Be unapologetically passionate about your niche interests.
@Gargron @lyss_lain I was going to say post into the void and hope that you find your tribe, but this works too. 😂

@Gargron @lyss_lain and be alone with it like on any other social media site.

Unless you are willing to play the system, focusing on building a following instead.

@Gargron
I will have to dig out some niche interests that noone else has any interest in!

@lyss_lain @Gargron
Any interest is niche if you focus on a small enough part!

But really, follow a lot of people (it's easy to unfollow again). If they boost an interesting post by someone, follow that account. Or there's an interesting comment, check that account out and maybe follow it. Boost and comment yourself, so other people can find you.

Also follow hashtags for stuff that interests you.

@lyss_lain @Gargron you're on fedi, you already have that part covered 😅
@lyss_lain @Gargron the best part about this is that if you do it sufficiently enthusiastically, you acquire converts!

@Gargron @lyss_lain

for sure but I'd say boost a lot.

imo you're asking a deep question nobody talks about anywhere. why does social media matter? and then why does it matter that it's decentralized? can't I just talk with my friends via text messaging or a group app like Discord or WhatsApp etc?

public posting with boosts without owners, ads or algos means the public could decide what gets attention in society instead of the people with money that own the media. a civic/cultural revolution.
