If the US hadn't decided that software was copyrightable, what would the outcome have been? Would we have seen software as a service type solutions earlier so the code wouldn't be shared, would we have seen vendors sell us a database computer and a spreadsheet computer and have the software very solidly embodied in them so it was hard to duplicate, or would we have seen a more egalitarian environment of sharing software?
