What do you think of the following as an introduction to the #Fediverse ?
"More than half of the world’s population are estimated to use social media in one form or another. However, the current state of social media leaves much to be desired. The richest man in the world uses the platforms he owns to openly support racism and fascism. The others are hardly better – they flood users’ feed with posts that are sure to upset them, in order to trigger responses and thus increase “engagement” and ad revenue.
Try out the following experiment: Open up the social media account of your choice, and scroll down your feed. How many of the posts you see are from:
- Advertisers,
- huge media conglomerates,
- or people whose views are abhorrent to you?
And what percentage of posts are from people you actually made the choice to follow?
None of this is an accident. Your online friends are nothing more than the hook that keep you on the platform, and your mutual presence ensure that you stay there – even as the user experience gets worse and worse. Everything else you see is either shown to keep you engaged – even if “engagement” means getting rage-baited by horrible people – or designed to extract money from you and the organizations who place their adds there.
But there is an alternative to the commercial platforms, their algorithms, and their hidden and not-so-hidden agendas: The Fediverse."
