if this law passes, it might really be time to go back to old electronics..
@bashbunni But an old phone won't help you here. This is something managed by a cell phone operator. I used to work with this kind of stuff. I even testified in court once ;)
@rjk that's it, I'm getting pigeons. I only need like 5

@rjk @bashbunni Even with a 48Mb ram piece of junk device that doesn't support geolocation? Are they going to use tower and satellite telemetry to triangulate people like me without a warrant and call you in without a subpoena?

To be clear, I'm one person with "nothing to worry about" but it sure feels like a lot of time, effort and data. Edit: and money*

@trevdev @rjk @bashbunni I went to a talk in grad school given by a cell carrier. They already track everyone's location using the tower grid, but the data set is "anonymous". It seemed very wink wink that it would be trivial to unmask someone if needed. This was well over a decade ago. It's bad.
@dvshkn @rjk @bashbunni Guess I'm just gonna use my land line then. Where am I? At home all the time.

@trevdev @rjk @bashbunni Yeah, unfortunately if you are on the cell network at all you have already lost

Edit: "lost" is a strong word, "you have already been logged" is a better phrasing

@dvshkn @rjk @bashbunni If* someone has a reason to look at the tracking data. There isn't any. I'm not even that big of a political upstart these days anymore. Life has been great without a smart device, not carrying my phone at all would be an easy next step.
@trevdev Sure, no one goes through all that data. There’s just so much of it that it’s physically impossible. But that data can be analyzed automatically. For example, I used to monitor text messages for sensitive words/phrases, and that data would then be sent to someone who would review it in some way.
@trevdev @bashbunni Normally, your phone connects to a single cell tower, and all connection parameters are logged. An operator knows roughly where you are, down to the specific antenna you’re using (a cell tower usually has several antennas serving different areas). When tracking is enabled, connection parameters are logged by three cell towers, and your location is calculated based on that information.
