Today is the official release day for Android 17. We've already fully ported GrapheneOS to Android 17 and are in the process of pushing the code to our public repositories. We're building a final official release based on Android 16 QPR2 today and we'll do an initial Android 17 release tomorrow.
We've already tested the Android 17 port of GrapheneOS on the Pixel 6a, 7, 7a, 8, 10a, 10 and 10 Pro Fold. It will be possible for people to start building and testing it themselves later today once we finish pushing the code. We'll start the process of public testing for official releases tomorrow.
@GrapheneOS I ordered a cheap Pixel 6 on eBay for less than $100. Will that get the Android 17 update? I plan on testing Graphene before getting a 10 Pro Fold for cheap.
@SugarButterBuns It will get Android 17 and Android 17 QPR1 but won't receive official Android 17 QPR2 support since it will be end-of-life soon. We haven't decided what we'll be doing in terms of extended support for 6th generation and later Pixels. We don't recommend continuing to use it beyond testing once it's end-of-life. Pixel 6a was released later so the support guarantee runs out a bit later but it's approaching end-of-life too. Pixel 8 and later get 7 years from launch instead of 5.
@GrapheneOS That is fine. I will test for a month or 2 then get the Fold after. Or maybe on Christmas. I got it planned out. Thanks for the response. Cannot wait to use GrapheneOS soon! Also I have to ask, do I need sandboxed play services to receive push notifications for apps or no? I am currently on a OnePlus 12 running LineageOS, some apps I have to open the app then the notification sends. I reply to people late because of it. I have MicroG installed as well.
@SugarButterBuns @GrapheneOS you do need sandboxed play for 99% of app notifs yes
@Lucario1829 @GrapheneOS I figured. Thanks for the response! :3 will be new to GrapheneOS soon. I plan on installing those sandboxed play services but no play store.
@Lucario1829 @SugarButterBuns It's needed for push notifications for most apps from the Play Store but there are definitely as decent number of apps supporting push notifications without it. Many email clients support IMAP IDLE for push notifications, there are Matrix clients with UnifiedPush support, Molly is a fork of Signal with UnifiedPush support and some apps like Signal itself have an inefficient fallback but in that case it's better to use Molly with UnifiedPush and a MollySocket server.
@GrapheneOS @Lucario1829 thank youuuu. I keep my apps installed to a minimal. I need WhatsApp for family so there is that lol. Thanks again for the detailed response!
@SugarButterBuns @Lucario1829 WhatsApp has non-Google push notification support but it might not work well and it at least partially depends on Play services for various features. If you want to largely avoid Google Play then you can use a dedicated work profile or Private Space for it instead of putting it in the Owner user so that apps in the Owner user won't be able to see it or use it but rather will use their non-Play code paths. Alternatively, just use a single profile for simplicity.
@GrapheneOS @Lucario1829 I plan on using a single profile for simplicity. :3
@SugarButterBuns @Lucario1829 That's perfectly fine. Sandboxed Google Play are regular sandboxed apps with no special access and the feature doesn't require multiple profiles. The main advantage of splitting it up is being able to avoid apps using it which use it when available but know how to work without it. That requires figuring out which ones need it and what they need it for such as Signal draining battery for push without it (Molly fork of Signal can be set up to use UnifiedPush).
@SugarButterBuns i do the exact same thing. my grapheneos phone is set up pretty much exactly as a normal phone, google play with my personal profile, and only one user. you still gain massively on security and privacy just by using graphene
@Lucario1829 so real. Yeah that will be how I use GrapheneOS.

@SugarButterBuns @Lucario1829

I've personally got mine setup with the base owner profile just vanilla Graphene, no extra apps installed at all over the base install. Then I have my personal user profile with everything installed that I essentially just use as a normal phone.

It's been working well for me since the start of the year when I installed it on my Pixel 10 Pro XL, just wish I didn't have to have WhatsApp installed at all, but family eh?

@sar families loves their spyware lol

@SugarButterBuns

IKR? My wife basically lives on Facebook, despite years of my nagging her to get off it completely 😑

@GrapheneOS @SugarButterBuns which is best option to get updates for next 5 years from now? Pixel 7 & later?

Edit : or should we wait for next year motorola device?

@GOKUSHRM probably the Pixel 8 Pro
@SugarButterBuns so pixel 8 pro will get updates untill 2031?

@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns We recommend getting the Pixel 8 or later due to 7 years of support from launch and meeting all current security standards. Pixel 6/7 had 5 years of support from launch which is running out and don't have for hardware memory tagging, pointer authentication, branch target identification and other newer hardware security features. See https://grapheneos.org/faq#recommended-devices for our official answer.

Motorola flagships with GrapheneOS support will likely be available within a year.

GrapheneOS Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to frequently asked questions about GrapheneOS.

GrapheneOS
@GrapheneOS @SugarButterBuns do you guys using F-Droid as ur default store? or something else?
@GOKUSHRM I use AuroraStore. It's very good from my experience.
@SugarButterBuns iis it default store for GOS?
@GOKUSHRM gotta download it from their GitLab. Look it up.
@SugarButterBuns but what is the default store of GrapheneOS
@GOKUSHRM idk I never used GrapheneOS before.
@SugarButterBuns haha, thn why you going for GOS? Because of Google?
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns The default App store which allows you to download Accressent and Google Play
@saint_ea @SugarButterBuns ok 👌.. Accessent barely 20 apps. So not useful
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns it is just a frontend for the google play store.
@canleaf @SugarButterBuns i Only asking what's the default store used by GrapheneOS... But people telling me use aurora store or F-Droid.... 🙄. Are these stores preinstalled with GOS? Like Google has play store inbuilt.. Samsung has own store in-built
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns Actually there is another GOS own app store, which allows you to install Google Play Store and Services mirrored. Defacto this is the official store. It is limited by offerings. so you need Aurora for GPS native apps, which might need GPS for ie displaying notifications. Fdroid is another store mostly without this requirements. GOS also allow sideloading of apk apps outside the store. the phone is totally yours. Just check apps with app verifyer by time to time.
@canleaf @SugarButterBuns can't we get notifications without GPS in Gos?
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns it is required for some apps like whatsapp. Sadly GPS is also spying on your contact lists.
@canleaf @SugarButterBuns i don't use WhatsApp
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns Very good. You can withdraw network access, even sensor and location access to individual apps with GOS. Contacts can be scoped if dealing with GPS access to the address book.
@canleaf @SugarButterBuns nice.. I'm waiting for motorola device with #GOS. I hope they ll introduce this device before the end of year.
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns maybe native and new is better than flashed pixels. You could buy a simlocked and bootloaderlocked pixel otherwise. On the other hand, the overboardening surveillance moved me to abandon a iphone 13 to get a pixel 7a.
@canleaf @SugarButterBuns i don't like pixel phones & buying a pixel is helping Google directly in terms of earning. There is no point of fighting against Google while buying pixel device phone at same time. So I'll wait for motorola... I used moto devices in past. They are good
@GOKUSHRM I understand that. If Motorola made a good folding phone with GrapheneOS, I'd get that in a heartbeat.
@SugarButterBuns I like simple phone, not foldable. A 6-6.2inch display is Enough with good ram & storage for heavy multitasking & gaming. Foldable are hard to carry. Can't put them in pockets. So big bulky heavier. My favorite phone model is asus zzenohone 9/10. What a masterpiece made by asus but stupid community rejected it ☹️. People fall for useless bigger screen that is inconvenient to hold and use in 1 hand.
@GOKUSHRM foldables are easier to carry because you can fold them. I like foldables mainly because they can be phones and tablets in 1.
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns Actually aurora is not preinstalled, so is not fdroid. The App Store is preinstalled. You receive GrapheneOS bare bone with Vanadium as browser, basic messaging, camera, the basic degoogled functionality. You are in charge of the phone. Not the phone in charge of you.
@canleaf @SugarButterBuns ok so app store is default store in Gos. Good. If you need more apps and services thn install aurora or F-Droid. Ok
@GrapheneOS I wanted to ask one thing. How will you manage motorola default apps (bloatwaee) with GrapheneOS . Is motorola agree to remove thm? Because all preinstalled apps works like a spy.
@SugarButterBuns
@GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns Their default apps aren't relevant to GrapheneOS since it won't be based on their operating system. GrapheneOS is based on the Android Open Source Project, not the stock OS on supported devices. Motorola will be providing us with stripped down driver/firmware code mainly from Qualcomm for building AOSP and GrapheneOS for their devices. Part of our requirements is having very good updates for this code so we can provids updates at least as well as we do for Pixels.
@GrapheneOS @GOKUSHRM @SugarButterBuns so glad to hear non-Pixel support is coming, thank you! ✨🏆✨ Are there any plans to support low-end phones so that GrapheneOS is available to more folks? I would love a burner phone that runs GrapheneOS. Perfect for travel. 😊
@GOKUSHRM @GrapheneOS @SugarButterBuns I guess the answer to your question would be: Pixel 9

@X_tof @GrapheneOS @SugarButterBuns ok, if I buy pixel 9 today or in a month thn I'll get updates untill 2032?
@GOKUSHRM August 1st, 2031. You got 5 years. You are good.
@GOKUSHRM @GrapheneOS @SugarButterBuns no, according to the table on that linked page it's supported until: "Ends in 5 years (01 Aug 2031)".
If you're looking for support until 2032 you should look for a Pixel 9a or any Pixel 10.
@X_tof @GrapheneOS @SugarButterBuns ohk. I think I should wait for motorola device next year. By that I willl get full 7 years of updates.

@GOKUSHRM

Hopefully helpful -

@SugarButterBuns Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were dropped from the latest Android 16 QPR1 Beta so they may not be getting it officially but the Pixel 6a will. Remains to be seen and we don't have precise information on the release dates or how soon the 6th generation Pixels will stop having official support.
@GrapheneOS alrighty, hoping to at least get GrapheneOS installed on it.
