Scientific American's Megha Satyanarayana asked me what advice I have for young scientists. My answer:

"Question everything, question the source of information that you get [...] Just follow all the rabbit holes [...] You spend years and years and years still asking the same question or following a specific rabbit hole that other people are too tired to follow. And that’s really where there is no shortcut to scientific discovery or innovation. You have to struggle."

@timnitGebru Thank you for these words.
@timnitGebru so true. I try to let my students feel that too: you have to learn to struggle. Nice thing about a good (undergrad) program: we're here to catch you when you fall. And get you back on your feet, same side of the struggle where you fell of :)
But it's hard to believe you need the struggle when solutions seem to grow at your fingertips...
@timnitGebru so thrilled to see you as part of this huge feature!! Really bolstering to the mind and spirit
@timnitGebru 💯 this. Teaching young scientists and engineers that it’s ok to make mistakes because that’s how we learn new/important things has been a recurring theme in my career. The system beats it out of them.
