@daringfireball As a European, I think the way the DMA is being applied to Apple is too strict and, in some ways, ideological. Sometimes it feels like the EU is using regulation to show that it still has weight, especially at a time when it looks weaker in other tech and industrial fields. The problem is that Brussels often seems to look at certain features in a flat, abstract way, without really understanding how they fit into the overall product experience.
@daringfireball Uncontrolled interoperability does not really help users. It often ends up strengthening already dominant competitors, such as Google. If the average user simply associates “browser” with Chrome, they do not really care what technology makes Safari different or better. Opening everything up does not automatically mean more freedom; it can also weaken the identity of a product. Personally, I would rather see iMessage brought to Android than lose Siri AI on iPhone in Europe.
