Things to do on your public transport commute that isn't doomscrolling: play guess the country/animal/plant.

One of my team members put me into the super cute animal taxonomy guessing game Metazooa (yes, the extra o is correct in this name). Heaps of fun. Do you start with a random reptile, or a spider, or a bird? Don't start with a mammal, there's way less of us.

Then I found Metaflora: same thing, but plants. And Globle, guess a country based on proximity, is helping me learn the various African and Middle Eastern nations.

They're aimed at high schoolers, so utterly perfect for end of the day post-work wind-down. And worthy of a listing for #onecoolthing

Metazooa

Become an evolutionary detective to find the Mystery Animal!

Metazooa

Huh, except today. Today it's a mammal! 3 guesses in, 17 left.

Update: got it in 9 guesses. Would have been 8 but I wanted to be fancy.

Totally satisfying, lightweight challenge. *Pats self on back*

@krinslife
Yessss, metazooa is so cool!! (and the others as well, but I mostly stick with metazooa xD)
And it's so fascinating to learn about how animals are related to each other. There's this meme, "shrimps is bugs", and it's almost true, just the wrong way around - bugs are shrimp! That is to say, they are part of pancrustacea!

@punktrock agreed, that's why I'm enjoying it. Especially after getting into Clint's Reptiles and Lindsay Nicole on YouTube last year.

Constantly chuckle when "bilateria" is the first response. Ok, that means I'm completely off, try something very different.

Was proud, however, to get Cassowary in 4 guesses the other day. Have soft spot for our dinosaur birds!

@krinslife
Ohhh interesting, I hadn't heard of these channels yet!! :D

And cassowaries are great, sad I missed them! I've got a friend who's very into birds, gave me a bit of a secondary interest into all those featherfolk!

@punktrock let me know how you go.
My first Lindsay Nikole video was "Shark facts to use as pickup lines", her humour got me right away.

Clint earned my respect with his video "Is a cockatoo the right pet for you?". Conclusion, almost certainly not, they're not suited for captivity unless you want to actively care for a toddler for the rest of your life. I love cockatoos, but they are very clever and will get utterly bored or destructive if not cared for properly so it was a relief to see that subject dealt with respectfully.

@krinslife
I have sought out those shark fact pickup lines and I've found them quite delightful!!

Haven't checked out Clint yet, but that does sound like a good video. Parrots in general are very cool, but as pets, well, seems like it takes a looot of work to do them justice!

An animal video creator I've grown quite fond of lately is The Octopus Lady - she focusses on marine animals and I really like her presentation style. One video I really liked was the one about frogfish - "This Cute Fish can KILL YOU in 7 Milliseconds".

I think I might really be ready for a nice little animal knowledge phase in my life, time to go and learn some stuff! :D

@punktrock re: cassowaries, I've had the privilege to see them in the wild, whilst on holiday as a teenager. Utterly gorgeous, very peculiar, and I'm very happy we were also a respectful distance away from the murder-bird.

Feather folk are a delight.
