so, english "ecchi" is a borrowing of japanese エッチ, which is itself a borrowing of english "aitch", referring to the letter "h", which was used because it is the first letter in the hepburn transliteration of 変態 (hentai), which is a shortening of 変態性欲者

@artemist I knew all of that but that last part. Loan words that go back and forth between languages are always amusing. I tend to point out katsu, which is a borrowing of カツ, which is a shortening of カツレツ, which is a borrowing of cutlet. One word goes in, completely different word comes out.
