Anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, self-harm, night terrors, panic attacks, and hallucinations are some of the symptoms inmates say they experience after being locked in solitary confinement.
Solitary confinement in Oregon prisons consists of 23 to 24 hours a day in a windowless cell smaller than a parking space. Inmates in solitary confinement are often forbidden from spending any time outside and are cut off from contact with other inmates and their loved ones outside of prison, according to the lawsuit. Some are kept in solitary for weeks or months at a time, and others are held there for years.
