The tide is turning on OOI. Today, 11 senators (including one Republican) and 23 House members sent letters to NSF demanding they stop the dismantling of the Ocean Observatories Initiative.

The House letter didn’t ask nicely. It said “cease this expensive, destructive, and — crucially — illegal action at once.” That word. Illegal. Federal law requires NSF to notify Congress at least 30 days before decommissioning any asset worth more than $2.5 million.
Lawmakers say that notification never came. For a $386 million system built over a decade. That they’re literally pulling out of the water tomorrow. This is what happens when the noise gets loud enough. Scientists speak up. Press covers it. The public shares it. & eventually, Congress has to act.
We’re not done. The first buoy comes up off the Oregon coast tomorrow. But legislation to block further decommissioning is being filed today. That’s momentum. Keep sharing. Keep talking about this.
The more outrage that’s visible, the harder it is to quietly strip 900 ocean sensors from the seafloor while nobody’s watching. They were counting on nobody watching. #OceanObservatoriesInitiative #OOI #SaveOOI #OceanScience #MarineScience
