A defining moment for Europe. 🇪🇺🤝🇲🇩🇺🇦

All EU countries have now agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster with Ukraine and Moldova.

Today, we're launching talks on the backbone of the accession process: including justice, freedom, and fundamental rights.

We've seen the hard work these countries have put in, and we are rewarding it with a clear path forward.

Enlargement is our strategic choice. Our best investment in a shared future of peace, security and prosperity

@EUCommission
A very good step forward.
By the time all chapters are done, the war will be over and Transdnistria will be a regular part of Moldova.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. My guess is that the frozen Transnistria conflict will remain frozen and Moldova will join with Transnistria remaining under occupation.

I'm more curious how the present war/occupation situation in Ukraine is going to fit in with EU's defense framework. I doubt that Ukraine will be allowed to claim a collective defense case for Putin's ongoing invasion. An approach that might work might be to exclude part of Ukraine from EU military

military protection while the rest of Ukraine would be protected by EU military.

@EUCommission can you elaborate on how this is going to work?

It will take time, is my main thought on how my ideas on it will be possible.
Estonia did a very clean and quick negotiation and ascension. First chapters opened in 1998. Final ones done in 2002. Membership in 2004.
Moldova managing to make Transdnistria fall through economic pressure in 4 years with TD being cut off from Russia? I hope that is possible and will happen.
Ukraine winning the war with full liberation of all territories by 2030? Seems possible to me, too.
@hallunke23 @EUCommission and if they haven't both won by then I'd want membership to wait(!) Until that have restored territorial integrity. No new (frozen) land disputes for the EU, please. Bad enough Cyprus is in one.
