these old german tank engines (and others too) are fascinating. I imagine this is a massive gear train that connects the crank to a flywheel with a clutch system that engages the engine crank to work as a starter.

This is at least how my brain visualizes this.

The sound on this is so freaking cool too. The gear whine makes it sound like a turbine starting up. Fun fact the M1A1 abrams has a turbine engine that can run on basically anything combustable, including kerosene and fuel oil. Which to the credit of the engineers made this possible. I wonder if this feature has ever been used in the real world.
