Behold, #ThePlaylist

And this week, a guest theme, courtesy of @Nickiquote, who wants to hear the world’s finest:

Car Wash Songs

And I do believe he’ll be very happy with what you’ve suggested. Will it be two hours of just that one song? Listen in and find out.

The tunes played this week, in case you couldn't hear my links over the noise of the air dryer that's somehow louder than a jet engine, but also almost completely ineffective.

NEXT WEEK ON #ThePlaylist

I'm not one for #TheSports, but many of you are, so I feel it's only fair that we celebrate the #WorldCup. With that in mind, next week's theme is:

Morally Bankrupt

An easy one, I feel! So let me know *your* suggestions for tunes that fit the theme using #ThePlaylistSuggestion, and together we'll build the perfect accompaniment to #TheSports.

@DJDarren Getting Papa Irish’s suggestions in first as I am at a Tesco: mine will follow later.

Green Day - American Idiot
Levellers - What A Beautiful Day (check the lyrics for the relevance)
Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies

Also, as a potential bed, he suggests the theme to the TV show Trumpton.

His politics may be apparent. #ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren This may surprise people who are not familiar with South Korean politics, but there’s actually a LOT of k-pop songs about corruption and moral bankruptcy, especially from BTS’s much cooler back catalogue from back before they did bullshit fluff music for Westerners. I had trouble narrowing it down.

BTS - Baepsae (The lyrics are based on a Korean idiom, but essentially this song is about socioeconomic inequality and about how those who have privilege and advantages shit on those who don’t. The English title is Silver Spoon, which sums it up.)

Girls’ Generation - Into The New World (So this isn’t about moral bankruptcy, but: in the recent protests in South Korea against the extremely corrupt coup-attempting shitheel president Yoon Suk-yeol, protesters brought their k-pop lightsticks and sang along to k-pop tunes. Including this one, which is a huge protest song in South Korea and is also often featured in Pride parades.)

And now for something completely different:

Rage Against The Machine - Sleep Now In The Fire (or Killing In The Name Of, or Wake Up, or Bulls on Parade, or literally any Rage song ever, DJ’s choice)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@astronomerritt @DJDarren anything by RATM works for me any day of the week!

“Yeah, I'm rollin' down Rodeo with a shotgun
These people ain't seen a brown-skinned man
Since their grandparents bought one”

Fuck yeah.

@DJDarren a 2am suggestion from Papa Irish:

XTC - Making Plans For Nigel

Because of Farage. My dad is not a fan.

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@astronomerritt Does the plan largely consist of a hammer to the bollocks? Because it may surprise you to learn that I'm on board with that.
@DJDarren My dad says he’d buy you the hammer.

@astronomerritt It's cool, I have my own and I'm happy to use it.

He'll *wish* he was being battered with milkshakes.

@astronomerritt @DJDarren I suspect most of the Levellers' catalogue would work, tbh.
@marramgrass @DJDarren Ha! You’re not wrong. I was going to recommend a different Levellers song myself but my dad wanted Beautiful Day so I let him have it.
@DJDarren This week I'm going with a #thePlaylistSuggestion of Carter USM's 'Sheriff Fatman' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQXRsshaZk8 and …
Carter U.S.M. - Sheriff Fatman

She Drew the Gun - Class War (Official Music Video)

@pete @DJDarren new to me, this is superb
@mothninja @pete @DJDarren Me too - I love it!
@ccferrie @mothninja @DJDarren Always nice to spread the love. Went to see her/the band last week having been a casual listener for years and it was great.
@pete @DJDarren Oh man, Carter USM, that's a blast from the past. Saw them back in 1993, at their peak, as we now know...
@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion Money Money Money - ABBA

@missmelanieh @DJDarren
And in a similar vein, “In It For the Money” by Supergrass!

@DJDarren #ThePlaylistSuggestion

The Magnetic Fields - The Day the Politicians Died
(no idea why my mind went to politicians when you mentioned moral bankruptcy, it's truly a mystery)

Half Man Half Biscuit - The Announcement
(there's a reference here to John McNamara, a multiply convicted fraudster who was both morally and literally bankrupt - this guy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McNamara_%28fraudster%29)

Sparks - Lighten Up, Morrissey
(well, you said you didn't want songs by Morrissey to represent moral bankruptcy, but you didn't say anything about not wanting songs about Morrissey)

John McNamara (fraudster) - Wikipedia

@DJDarren Also for #ThePlaylistSuggestion - I don't know how best to suggest these but here are some possible themes I thought of:

Farming and rural affairs, countryside, that sort of thing
Waking up
Bodies of water
Recovery and repair
Accidents
Modern technology
Getting older and not being young any more

Please please please PLEASE don't feel under any kind of obligation at all to use any of these.

@RolloTreadway @DJDarren Farming? But he’s played Farmer In The City now!
@swisslet @RolloTreadway I have played songs twice, y'know.
@DJDarren @RolloTreadway please know that we appreciate you! You must put a huge amount of work into this every week and all you get is people like us going, “oooh, and also this one”.
You’re the best and the show is great.

@DJDarren Can I add in a cheeky extra #ThePlaylistSuggestion?

I was just in the supermarket, and they were playing a great song over the tannoy:

Electronic - Getting Away With It

And I suddenly realised: I need to suggest this. After all, morally bankrupt people are getting away with it all the time, all their lives.

And also it is an absolutely majestic song that has somehow never been played in a hundred and whatever episodes.

@DJDarren

Bruce Dickinson - Tattooed Millionaire

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@woe2you funnily enough, I was listening to this album today for the first time in about 35 years!
@swisslet It's not quite up there with Accident of Birth or Chemical Wedding, but still a great album.
@woe2you I’m doing an Iron Maiden immersion with a group on FB. I grew up with the band and love the albums up to Seventh Son, in particular. We just did No Prayer for the Dying and it’s MUCH better than I remembered it. Not their best, but not as shit as my memory told me. Tough to follow SSoaSS, tbf.
@swisslet Shocking confession: I haven't made time to sit down and listen to anything from cover to cover since BNW. I should remedy that.
@woe2you me neither, tbh and the group choosing Iron Maiden for an immersion was a gift for exactly that reason and I jumped at the chance to go through an album a day. First band we’ve done that I’ve really loved in advance (although Slayer was fun!). Usually it’s bands like the Beach Boys or the Fall or something. After Fear of the Dark tomorrow, I don’t know the albums anywhere near as well, so it should be fun.

@swisslet @woe2you Seventh Son was the last one I remember enjoying.

Then I finished school and got caught up in 'life' and never made it back.

Was pleased when my son took up the mantel.

@roknrol it’s their peak for me. The ones after Fear of the Dark (tomorrow) should be fun as I don’t know them anywhere near as well. I loved Wolfsbane but never even listened to the Blaze albums really either.
@swisslet Oh shit, I forgot about FoTD...that was a pretty good one too.
@DJDarren I'm nominating the entire discography of the "Presidents of the USA" on the theme "Morally Bankrupt". #ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren I would have gone for Sympathy for the Devil or Sinnerman but we’ve had those.
@DJDarren I could suggest anything by P Diddy but will refrain and work on coming up with some more uplifting #hiphop suggestions

@DJDarren ok here it comes: my #hiphop #thePlaylistSuggestion for the theme Morally Bankrupt is the Geto Boys’ Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta.

They’re the best at introspection on personal morality in a morally bankrupt society, and with this particular track make sure you listen through to the final verse.

@slevelt Damn it feels good to be a gangsta

https://youtu.be/g2iErckaIl8

Office Space- Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta

YouTube
@DJDarren 🤣 but also do note that one omits the final verse!
@slevelt Yeah, I reckon Diddy's on the pile with Morrisey at this point. Though at least Morrisey isn't an actual predator. He's just a cunt.
@DJDarren allegedly
@DJDarren I mean, allegedly he’s not a predator, but what do we know 🤷🏻‍♂️

@DJDarren Bauhaus - Crowds

I'm sure I'll have more but this jumped out at me.

And I shall now be withdrawing to my eldritch coffin to listen to the rest of 1979-83 Volume 2.

#thePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren Crush - Tall Dwarfs

Pack of Lies - The Fatima Mansions

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

@DJDarren

- Evil by Interpol (*edit* great suggestion by @Nickiquote+1!)
- Wicked Game by Chris Isaak
- Lil’ Devil by the Cult
- Demons by The National
- Cross Road Blues by Robert Johnson (selling your soul for anything seems quite morally bankrupt, I’d say)

Dr Caitlin suggests:

- You’re the Devil in Disguise by Elvis

- Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones

- Broke by Scott Lavene (actually bankrupt)

#ThePlaylistSuggestion

Scott Lavene - Broke (Official Video)

@swisslet I’m sure I’ve mentioned it in other chats before, but I have two recommendations related to Robert Johnson and the delta blues.

1. Clarksdale, Mississippi. (Maybe not right now!) and the not-too-far-away Dockery Farms.

2. A graphic novel about Robert Johnson called Love In Vain. It’s rather beautiful.

Also a bonus 3. Sod it, why not? The film Sinners.

@DJDarren
#ThePlaylistSuggestion
Some thoughts for morally bankrupt

Flesh Tetris - Landfill Cindy
Reverend Peyton's big damn band- Devils look like angels
The men that will not be blamed for nothing - Baby farmer

@DJDarren first thought is:

Suicidal Tendencies - Send Me Your Money

More #thePlaylistSuggestion tracks in due course, I’m sure…
