Bruce Banner canonically has 7 PhDs and honestly the fact that he periodically turns into a giant green ragemonster after spending that much time in academia without tenure is the most believable thing in the entire Marvel canon.

@mhoye And with 7 PhDs he's canonically both an idiot and has commitment-to-reality issues, which also tracks. I mean, seriously. Nobody with any actual contact with the real world's going to go for 3 (or even 2) PhD's, let alone 7.

@cainmark @mhoye Deferring student loan payments (or having a crazy dead uncle -- Fred Cassidy has entered the chat) seems like an excellent reason to defer getting the first PhD rather than going for a second.

@wordshaper @mhoye I have met someone with two PhDs. Was as you would expect. Also know someone with 1½ PhDs but he's kinda normal. For someone with a PhD.

I tried to go for two back in the day but the university told me to just choose one. Still, I did eventually get formal postdoc credentials (the local equivalent to the Habilitation of the German academic culture, at the level of associate professor in US terms) and have worked as a university lecturer in both fields, and been the president of a learned society in a third unrelated one. Seven completed doctorates is a bit on the unbelievable side, though, even with high intelligence and ADHD.
