Since the move, my Mac Studio refuses to recognize devices attached to any external USB hub.

System Report shows the hubs, just not anything hooked to them. #headdesk

Gonna go work on something else. Maybe my bed has stopped stinking like a dead thing?

just remembered--I bought AppleCare+ on this beast! will open a ticket tomorrow.

Mac update:

Powered everything off at the power strips. Left it for a couple hours.

Disconnected all cables. Blew any dust out of everything. (Didn't see any dust, but still, blow it all out.)

Reconnect firmly.

Power on.

And... things work.

When in doubt, take a break and fall back to basics.

@mwl My usb3-hub needs to be restarted ~ every 3 months, my android phone needs a restart every three weeks or so (for clock drift, gps won't lock), a chromecast dongle needs a restart ~ every month, my old mac needed a restart ever week for clock drift or DAWs would skip... And there I was in 2005 thinking that the clock drift problems would be solved already.
@mwl Unfortunately that didn't work for me.
@mwl
Where the hubs connected in a certain order before, did they get reordered when reconnected? (I'm thinking some device id hierarchy, but I'm guess at smoke).
@sirwumpus only one hub plugged in at a time, I just tried several. With different cables.  :flan_headdesk:
@mwl
Don't some USB cable manufacturers produce charging power only cables and some full spec power and data? How many cables do you have to try?

@mwl

The bed sounds more urgent to me.

@Ahuka sadly, the bed will stop stinking when it finishes offgassing. I'm rolling on it, fans going, etc. Just gotta wait.

I have a sofa bed for now.

@mwl This happened to me with my MacPro a few months ago. I unplugged it to reorganize my music studio. Since plugging it back in and reconnecting things using the same cables in the same ports only the USB-A ports and one TB 3 port works. The USB-C hub I was using for years is no longer recognized but works fine on my Linux laptop.
@peteorrall well, at least it's not just me? ugh

@mwl
Give this a try first. Might not help, but cannot hurt.

M-series Macs don’t have a System Management Controller (SMC). The functions the SMC handled are now handled by the M chip itself. Shut down the Mac completely. Unplug all all cables including the power cable. Leave it off for 30 seconds to perform something like an SMC reset. After 30 seconds, power on the Mac, plug in the hub. If this doesn’t work you may need to reinstall the firmware, which requires either a second Mac or a trip to the Apple Store.

Best of luck 🖖🏼

@Voline I shut everything off at the power strip at night, will try again this morning, ty!
@mwl I assume you‘re aware of USB1/2/3 tunneling when USB4 (or Thunderbolt) is involved?
@RecoveredExpert ugh. No. I'll go look it up.
@mwl I suggest not doing that before going to sleep.
@RecoveredExpert wise, I'm sure
@mwl I wish, but I do learn from my mistakes and try to prevent other from having to repeat that.
