NEW: A group of dozens of cybersecurity experts published an open letter criticizing the U.S. government ban on the export of Anthropic’s powerful AI models Fable and Mythos.

The group said the ban is going to hurt cybersecurity defenders working to secure their code and products, and claimed it was based on a misunderstanding.

"This action has taken the best models away from defenders," the letter read.

Cybersecurity vets protest 'dangerous' US government ban on Anthropic's most powerful models | TechCrunch

A group made up of dozens of cybersecurity experts urged the White House to remove export control restrictions on Anthropic’s models Fable and Mythos, arguing that the order is going to limit the ability of cybersecurity defenders to secure their software and products.

@lorenzofb Great, let me just check how many times the US government (especially this US government) has listened to experts... Oh.

@lorenzofb at the risk of committing the cardinal sin of expressing nuance on the Internet, everything below can be true.

  • The US government didn’t take the capability out of defenders’ hands.
    • Anthropic did because that’s the only way they can comply, because they did not consider the logical consequences of hyping this as a weapon is that it might be subject to laws surrounding weapons.
  • Using export controls like this is regressive and ineffective.
  • Every other LLM with this capability (which is to say all of them) should be subject to the same legal framework, regardless of how good/bad they are at that capability.

@lorenzofb addendum:

  • AI companies deserve every bad thing that happens to them.
@lorenzofb Halon's razor states:
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. But there's an awful lot of room here for both.
Almost looks like this is another step in the US gov retaliation against Anthropic, because they refused the offer of helping the US withlmilitary application of AI. 🤷‍♀️ Rampant speculation of course, but I can't help but wonder.
