A MODEST PROPOSAL: rather than limiting kids' access to social media, I think we would do better to ban ALL computing devices with a user-accessible OS that can run user-installed applications that weigh less than 16kg.

Our societal ills with infotech are amplified by portability and ubiquity. This proposal would kill smarphones and hamstring tablets and laptops: the most portable IT kit would be an e-bike.

What are the implied consequences of such a ban?

@cstross #WeAreNotWaiting started it for #diabetes - first an Edison, now usually a smartphone, open source software on something you carry around gets data from CGM sensors, and tells insulin pump what to do based on that.
There are commercial versions where pump directly talks to sensors, but all are highly proprietary and expensive, and some involve subscription service.
Also, google locking down android threatens that too.
