@rupert 👍 Good guess, but no, ours is only found in southern Africa. Rockhoppers have a much wider distribution:

Cute little guys - we saw a colony down near Punta Arenas in Chile.

My grandparents lived not far from the colony that established itself at Boulders Beach near Simonstown. I used to play there as a kid. Never once did I have the urge to lay an egg, though.
As the colony is in a suburb, signs like the one below are necessary on the main road. Snap taken last year on our holiday to SA.

NormanDunbar@mybirdcards I have seen these on Seaforth Beach in South Africa. I also think they had their names changed a while back to something more politically correct!
If I remember (from 2006) it's now Cape/South African penguin and no longer Jackass penguin.
(And I didn't cheat again this time! 😁)

i've never seen this bird IRL, sadly, back in the day i missed seeing it by ONE day... the day before my visit to see a Verreaux's Eagle at their nest site, that's the day they caught and brought in one of these penguins to feed their young... so none of the other penguins hung around & there was no live penguin for me to see when i came the next day
good views of the Eagles tho...

@mybirdcards its Humboldt they have in the local zoo, and i just thought they looked rather alike at a glance 😅
