#Fouling means that #sessileanimals as #crustaceans or #mussels attach themselves to non-living #underwatersurfaces as #shiphulls. According to Capt. Raghu Sharma (2026), this particularly affects ships beyond the #StraitofHormuz due to #warmwaters and #highsalinity. It increases #hydrodynamicdrag leading to higher #fuelconsumption (M. Tadros et al. 2022).

@stefanfwirth And it's amazing how little it takes to start affecting the ship.
@Dolphinchaz hi, that's true, and also interesting to note, how fast the hull of a ship can be overgrown, and that it is even no sign of environmental decline, but in contrary of good conditions. And nevertheless it can remarkably harm ship traffic and their trade, especially, when ships are in longer waiting lines to be allowed to pass water ways.
Can anything be done? Up here in the North, they used to ward this off with paint. Which of course was toxic and which of course you're not allowed to use anymore. Don't know any boat owners, though, so not sure how big the problem is up here.
