Seeking #recommendations: The plastic on my 10-year-old headphones is starting to melt so it might be time to treat myself to a new set.

My absolute number 1 concern, which is never mentioned in reviews or listings, is that I DO NOT WANT them to beep or talk to me when I turn them on or connect them or do anything. Do you have good headphones which don't make any noises of their own?

On- or over-ear, not buds. Noise cancelling quailty is not a super high priority.

Oh and my current headphones are wired but I like the idea of wireless/bluetooth. But it seems like in the last ten years that's become so universal that it might be embarrassingly old-fashioned for me to even think I need to specify that's a requirement?

@Averixus after reading just the first toot I wanted to ask if you are seeking for a Bluetooth one. But maybe I'm old fashioned too 🤔

No recommendations though, the ones I know have some sort of auditory feedback at least when turning off/on. I find it quite useful. I know an open ear that doesn't and it annoys me because I'm never sure they're off.

@Averixus I know my Shokz bone induction Bluetooth headset tells me when it's powering on and off, and is wireless. I've found it helpful to know when it's going on or off (with a different notification noise) because sometimes I've left it on after a phone call but it's not receiving anything, so I forgot it was on and accidentally turned it off instead of keeping it on.

I don't know if you can get a wireless headset without a small on/off notification, tbh. I think my Beats also does it.

@Averixus My partner recently had to replace our headphones because they'd worn out, so they grabbed a few different things from Koss and none of them do anything annoying, they just work. Note though that they're all wired, and I don't know if any of their wireless options beep at you.

@Averixus because of the possible complications with wireless connections, I suspect that every wireless option will have *some* sort of indicator sound. Someone else in the thread mentioned shokz: mine ("open run pro" model, ~2 years newish) tell me "power on" and "power off" only in words, but beep before the word "connected" when connecting to any other device

A wired headset, maybe with a simple indicator light when it's plugged in to a powered device, sounds most suited to your needs imo

@Averixus (I have reading comprehension I promise) and you were looking for things with no extra sounds, not even the words as indicators, so "but" was perhaps the wrong conjunction there.

...anyway, my conclusion stands: continue looking for wired headphones to avoid the extra noises

@Averixus actually, I think I used to have a headset at a previous job that uniquely paired to its USB receiver, rather than Bluetooth connecting to any available device. The USB receiver (unlike wireless mice which get a tiny stub) had a cord leading to a charging station for the headset to be stored on. I don't remember the brand, or if it made sounds when the headset started running low on battery, but it didn't make noises to indicate its connection status. So wireless product may exist
