Western Sydney International Airport opening date announced

After 15 years of planning, seven years of construction and a year of testing, Western Sydney International Airport has confirmed its opening date for passengers.

Interesting: I see Cranky Flier's weekly newsletter derides the Western Sydney Airport #WSI / #YSWS as "Eastern Perth Airport". Do any Australians call it that? It's a hilarious exaggeration of how far the new airport is from the city center. (But no curfew.) It reminds me of the exaggeration Denver residents have about the DEN airport "conveniently located in Kansas." It isn't anywhere near that far away. But they make their point. https://crankyflier.com/2026/06/12/cranky-weekly-review-presented-by-oakland-san-francisco-bay-airport-spirit-wins-in-court-sydneys-new-airport-is-nearly-ready/ #aviation #travel #avgeek

Lessons from history suggest it's possible for an airport to be too far from its city if there's no train service. Western Sydney Airport #WSI / #YSWS should push to avoid further delays on its train station. It'll likely survive. Usage may be low in the 2 year gap.
Contrast: Montreal's Mirabel Airport YMX / CYMX proved to be too far away: airport opened 1975; no trains; airline terminal closed 2004. YMX remains a cargo/maintenance base & Airbus A220 factory. #Australia #aviation #travel #avgeek
