Scary...

"Offloading the struggle to a chatbot does not “free students up for higher-order work.” It deprives them of building the strength to do any substantial cognitive work at all."

Opinion | My Students Can’t Read

The generational collapse in literacy is measurable, persistent, and likely to get worse.

The Chronicle of Higher Education
@fingers between COVID and AI, a generation of students have been deprived of a major chunk of the educational foundation they need for becoming functional adults. Universities are already reporting a shocking increase in students arriving without the basic math and reading skills to pass coursework. What is going to happen to a generation of young people who were deprived of a decent education education and now of even the skill of learning itself? I'm really worried for them, as well as for societies built on the premise that the old can be financially supported by the wages, taxes, and caregiving time of the young.

@Etch9 Really? Not for me. Maybe the "Bypass Paywalls" extension I use took me straight past that requirement. I can definitely read it without being signed in
