College Freshmen Are Showing Up Unable to Read a 20-Page Document

Plunging assessment scores show reading skills are vanishing, with an instructor complaining his pupils can't understand basic assignments.

Futurism

@jan before I even started it, I knew this was going to be another "blame it on AI" article

AI has only been around for a couple of years. Students - people in general - have been losing the ability to concentrate and read "long" articles for years

It's been commonly attributed to smart phones, social media, and before that... television, with its 30 cuts per minute filming style

It's a technological switch to dopamine hits. AI is something that is only starting to show in the results

(All of the above is "IMHO", but it's been reported on for years)

@codebyjeff it's not just blame it on AI though. The other factors are also clearly in it.

It is an accelerator, though.

@jan @codebyjeff this sincerely has me wonder if there are other skills they are developing instead.

For example, we don't have the same learn-by-memorization skills that were in place before books were cheap and abundant. I can find info, so i don't need to memorize it.

I am not around students, so i sincerely don't know.
