On this day in 2002, one of the best movies of all time premiered: Bubba Ho-Tep.

If you haven't seen it yet, drop everything and watch it now.

Synopsis: An elderly man in an East Texas nursing home claims to be Elvis Presley — and may actually be right. His only ally is a Black man convinced he's JFK. Together, in wheelchairs and walkers, they battle an ancient Egyptian soul-sucking mummy that's preying on the residents. Bureaucratic horror meets genuine pathos. Completely unironic.

@spaf If all of that isn't enough to convince: It stars Bruce Campbell.

@datarama @spaf

And Ossie Davis as JFK

@spaf Yeah, it would be an excellent #Monsterdon screening. We used to have an annual screening/bbq party that we'd do.

@spaf

i think it was bruce campbell's finest role. ossie davis was great, as usual.

a classic.

@spaf the author wrote a prequel novel, Bubba and the Cosmic Blood-suckers.
@spaf I remember recounting the story to coworkers during a lunch break. I think the look on their faces was basically horrified disbelief that I would watch a movie like this. I probably just told it wrong. Great movie.

@spaf

Two magnificent hams playing this ridiculous story as absolutely straight as possible is a total pleasure. This movie is a joy. Movies should be like this.

@spaf That graffiti in the bathroom stall about Cleopatra killed me with laughter when I saw this in an indie movie theater.

@spaf My original viewing for it was in a theater where Bruce was hosting.

Good and bad, I got the experience I was expecting.

@jhaas @spaf

Was that one of the stops on his book tour, maybe the Illinois stop?
