@imp3tuz

Beautifully put together! Also, ouch 💔

@deirdrebeth so so soooo beautiful. and RIP <3
@imp3tuz That was beautiful to watch 🥹 2:16-3:05 might warrant a CW for sexual assault, but it isn't presented abruptly. I would have been able to skip it if I felt the need. I'm really glad I watched, thank you for sharing 💖✨
@cargot_robbie awww I'm sorry for failing to mention that. will update my post 💕🙏🏾
@imp3tuz no harm done! Thanks for including it in the post for folks to see, you're fabulous 💖✨

@imp3tuz

Dang, I would not call this whimsy!

A story everyone who has been a young woman can relate to, tho

@NilaJones I'll take it you haven't engaged with much African film huh?

@imp3tuz

Because I didn't find a story about the consequences of sexual assault whimsical?

@NilaJones your initial response indicates a judgement cast without the context of Film in the African context.

Yes the subject matter is heavy, but the cinematography, costume design, and portrayal of girlhood represents a kind of whimsy you'll only see on occasion wandering these streets of South Africa.

Your comment feels like someone trying to put a thing they can't fully identify with (i.e black African whimsy) into a box they can better understand (simply Trauma).

but idk, that's my 2c

@NilaJones like if I told you the film On Becoming A Guinea Fowl was an absurdist comedy you'd probably doubt my descriptor because these may just be stories you cannot see yourself in.

@imp3tuz

I certainly saw myself in Finally!

I grew up in a rural place, and the events of the film, and the way the different scenes are connected to each other, felt very familiar to me

I'm not really sure what you mean by trauma with a capital t, but I might have an idea

I'm old, so most of my life has taken place before the current ways of thinking about trauma in the north

But it's always been true that the intense experiences of our lives, whether bad or good, have downstream effects

@NilaJones okay my initial hostility is quelled. i think we are reaching understanding.

so in good faith, I'd also recommend you check out this album: AFRICAN GIRLS DO CRY by 9DAYS

@imp3tuz

Thank you so much 😊. I really appreciate your patience with me, explaining things to me

@imp3tuz

Thank you. Yes it's true that I'm seeing it without the proper context

It sounds also like you are saying that part of the context is that the word whimsy has a particular meaning, in African film, and not the meaning that I'm familiar with. Have I got that right?

@NilaJones yessss! that!

and like the director is my friend, if you were to meet them you wouldn't stop smiling 🤣

Eli is who I would call the DEFINITION of whimsy 🤭😆...but like most African Girls, we've all got to who we are for many reasons
