@evan I have this memory that you can edit the toot containing the poll without invalidating the poll, but it’s a vague memory.
@evan all I know of them was Clarke and Dawe and that was plenty to elevate their status
@evan This result has definitely been lead by people who haven’t had to suffer the BBC’s manic centrism over the past decade. “Balance” is way more important to them than truth.
I'm aware that there are other public broadcasters. Please pick the best of these 4. If you like naming public broadcasters, though, feel free to do so in the comments.
Thanks to everyone who voted! I think our Canadian services, CBC and Radio Canada, are a lot of fun and they have meant a lot to me personally. But NPR is still what I wake up to every day. It's a tossup but I'm going with PBS/NPR.
@evan voted PBS/NPR, but I know hardly anything about the BBC and basically nothing about the ABC so it’s pretty unfair
@evan Need to do another poll, "which country do you live in" and use that one to normalize these results 😂
@evan if it not publicly funded you are part of the problem

@evan PBS is amazing considering how little money they get, but the constant groveling for money is a major turn off.

All of them have issues - but for historical reasons, reach and variety of programming I picked the BBC.

Second would probably be the ABC or CBC.

@evan

PBS ekes it out for me because of a history of fantastic, high quality childrens programming and legendary hosts like Fred Rogers, Levar Burton, and Bob Ross.

ARTE

@evan

They don't advertise it, but they do sneak in some news and current events.

@evan I'm going to guess that this will be a poll of your readers/responders country or region of origin, more than a poll of actual or perceived public broadcasting best-ness.

My guess may be wrong.

@Bodling @evan

I'm British but voted for CBC rather than BBC (I do have a lot of Canadian mutuals and am curious about the country) - CBC seems to have a lot more no nonsense news reporting without the fake feel good filler material the UK's state broadcaster puts on its own website (although it might be as a foreigner I'm viewing a cut down version of what CBC publish due to copyright issues?)

@vfrmedia @Bodling @evan That's funny. I (Canadian) voted for BBC largely for historical coverage, though I suppose the same is true for CBC. I suspect both broadcasters have plenty of fluff though - particularly these days. More and more editorial-style. 😒
@askDNA @vfrmedia @Bodling @evan I'm from the US and I went CBC because we can get it with cable tv here and it's always got better Olympics coverage.
@jessamyn @vfrmedia @Bodling @evan But with a stark lack of Snoop Dogg.
@evan i would have added little flags of the countries to names of the broadcasters, would also help make it clear that ABC is the australian one
@evan I went with BBC, but if we were going just news, I probably would have given it to PBS/NPR.

@evan While I find that from and American perspective, NPR is probably the most trustable national outlet we have, I find that it is not the only high quality news outlet.

There is a 501(c)(3) organization called States Newsroom that has my attention the most lately. They have a very clear Ethics in place. They are favoring clear journalism over everything else, they are focused on covering both national and state specific stories. And they are publishing their news for free.

So, while they aren't a public "broadcaster", I think they are a far more reliable news outlet.

@evan PBS has some great youtube channels. that's the extent of my knowledge 😇.
