Looks like a matter of a shitty incumbent with shitty policies (specifically lack of opposition to the massively fraudulent payoff for pro-Trump criminals) attracting especial ire from a centrist with the same name. And unlike other pissed off centrists/conservatives, he can at least get some attention by running, which undoubtedly acted as a motivator.
