Why do we say "Eastern Ontario" but "West Quebec"?

I am an old-school sailor.

I spent a week in Montréal. And, at that time and place, there was a substantial cultural disconnection from WGS-84 which I was never able to resolve, in any language. Even official charts and signage.

I expect I would find similar issues in Ontario were I to spend time there.

So I have no idea what you mean with "Eastern Ontario" or "West Quebec". Possibly coordinates in the TARDIS.

Montréal really is a geographic entity unto itself: one just has to remember that their "north" on streets really is more west, while their "east" is more north.

On maps you need to distinguish "True north," "Magnetic north," and "Montréal north."

@david_megginson @Amgine There's a pragmatic reason for this, others can explain the origin and history better than I can do.

River flows Eastward. North and South are going deeper inland on each side of the island as land gets distributed.

@ooze Other places deal with with this quandary by naming streets "Main St NW" etc. rather than pretending west is north, but also, J'♥️ Montréal and I hope they never change.

Some more things I should learn about the island, and the Province! I assume it is related to the signeuries and surveying.

That is an entire rabbit warren's worth of holes for me to get lost in. Something I want to do, but after I get the current tasks off my plate!

@david_megginson

Exactly!

It was culturally wonderful. At an unconscious level I am constantly tracking solar north, and rarely lose my way. But I was lost much of my time in Montréal, stumbling upon all kinds of cool things I likely would never have discovered, else.

But also unsettling.

Over all a great experience, and I suggested we should move there; my partner disagrees. siiigh.
