So, this used to be one of my father's favorite movies of all times.

I don't know what to do with that now*:

"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is the grandest, most delightful, most ambitious MGM technicolor musical that was ever based on the story of a mass rape."

* I'm being snarky with this

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers: An Explainer

“‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ is the grandest, most delightful, most ambitious MGM technicolor musical that was ever based on the story of a mass rape.”...

@azteclady I think there's a certain overkill in that quote.
@wil
The superlative is as problematic as the film admittedly is.
@azteclady

@wil I mean, not really IMO, but granted, our mileages clearly vary on this one.

ETA: also, perhaps I should have made it clear that my post is also partly snark.

@azteclady i know, it has a PG certificate too!! It was my mother’s favourite film for many years until her teenage daughters objected to the actual story (in the 1980s) and her defence was that the Rape of the Sabine Women was classical (so that’s ok?). I could sing you all the songs I have seen it so often but I wouldn’t justify one minute of glorious Technicolor!

@azteclady

not mass rape, mass kidnappings yes, mass stockholm syndrome, yes, but no nookie until after they were wed, so no actual rape.

And Adams stance that what they did is wrong does help.

But..... grrrr because... stuff!
