PeerTube P2P protocol + HLS

1/

PeerTube uses a P2P protocol with HLS to distribute videos — and to reduce costs for serving videos.

(It is somewhat BitTorrent / WebTorrent like.)

I wonder how often how often P2P downloads tend to happen.

It probably depends on a number of things — but it would be interesting try to understand it better.

I imagine P2P downloads could be made more common (than they currently are) if people were encouraged to save videos locally — because they could then serve chunks of that saved video to others.

And, if people were rewarded somehow for serving video chunks to others — that could further make P2P downloads more common.

(These incentives existed for some BitTorrent sites decades ago.)

@reiver You can see how much of a video is being downloaded from peers vs server by hovering mouse over the "x Peers" indicator on the play controls. As one might expect, p2p happens more often with videos that are currently popular (new releases and/or widely shared videos).
BitChute can do that too…but it rarely happens. Another great idea that works better in PowerPoint than in the real world. I wish it weren’t the case.
@reiver on "popular" peertube instances like https://video.blast-info.fr/ with videos getting ~1k views in their firt week, I see a lot of p2p, often barely downloading from servers at all. But otherwise it tend to be rare.
