I have no words to describe how I feel about this. I’ll just leave this here.

Oh, I have a word: morons.

Most Americans Aren't Convinced Humans Are Causing Climate Change, New Data Shows

Americans Are Still Skeptical Humans Are Causing Climate Change

Scientists have reached a consensus that human behavior is a big driver of climate change—but Americans aren't buying it.

Forbes
@t3rcermillenium Well, that is the most depressing thing I’ve heard of the 5,000 depressing things I’ve become aware of since I woke up this morning.

@feisty_lemming it’s like we’re living in a world defined by articles from The Onion.

I wish I could point to the Trump Regime as cause, but it runs deeper than that.

There is serious money being pumped into the US info-sphere to push various agenda.

And you ultimately have to look at the state of the education system that removes all critical thinking from a population.

@t3rcermillenium Hmm. I’m reading that Pew report now. Depressing! Also, that Forbes article is sloppily written. Maybe an AI summary?

Examples:

Forbes: “KEY FACTS Pew released new data Thursday that shows only 48% of Americans believe climate change is the result of human activity—a view shared by a vast majority of scientists—and fewer people believe it now than when the same question was asked in 2019 and 2022.” That’s their leading paragraph.

Pew: “Americans’ views on what, if anything, is causing climate change have been largely stable since 2016.” (In bold in the report)

(In 2019 and 2022 the survey responses were slightly higher, but in other years lower, leading to no trend. It’s oddly sensationalised cherry-picking by Forbes.)

Forbes: “The vast majority of active climate scientists (97%) agree that humans are causing global warming and climate change, according to NASA.”

Just 97%?!

Pew: “Almost all climate scientists say the planet is warming, and that this is caused mostly by human activity.” Pew links that sentence to a 2021 science paper which concludes the following. “Out of a group of 153 independently confirmed climate experts, 98.7% of those scientists indicated that the Earth is getting warmer mostly because of human activity such as burning fossil fuels. Among those with the highest level of expertise (independently confirmed climate experts who each published 20+ peer reviewed papers on climate change between 2015 and 2019) there was 100% agreement that the Earth is warming mostly because of human activity.”

@joncounts

the US is an outlier among developed economies, probably a combination of it being a major oil producer and a very pronounced right-left split on this issue (the divide is nowhere as wide in other countries).

But while depressing, it seems +/- the opinions haven't really changed over the years.

@t3rcermillenium Probably why so many voted for Trump. They don't have a clue.
