DSNY (Department of Sanitation New York) has the most aggressive slogan... and NYPD has the most dainty slogan and I find this endlessly funny. #nyc #newyork #nypd #dsny
@futurebird when the ENglish teacher wants an exmple of irony....
@futurebird I don't know. I think the CPR adequately states what NYPD demands from the populace. 🤔

@ColesStreetPothole

I'm absolutely certain that if you did a poll of them that's what they think it means.

(The CPR push is a part of decades long effort to improve the NYPD and there are people who really want them to be better. But those people in the minority within the organization which thinks of itself as unloved and under-appreciated ... persecuted even. It's a bad dynamic. With a big power imbalance too. )

@futurebird Indeed. I know a person of color who entered the force, then promptly left because the mindset the further up you go is just increasingly toxic. And while mayors/commissioners come and go, the PBA is forever, it seems. Wild that even the Giuliani and Adams administrations had run-ins with the PBA.

@futurebird The sanitation slogan seems partially borrowed from Texas:

Don't Mess with Texas - Wikipedia

@michaelgemar

I always liked the take that the slogan "don't mess with texas" doesn't convey that texas is tough but more that it's ... unstable. And it needs space.

Kind of like texas has been going through a lot ... and just... please don't mess with it right now.

@futurebird @michaelgemar

My brain always mashes up the phrase with a well known country song to produce:

"All my ex's messed with Texas."

Like maybe Texas needs to get its sh!t together and get some counseling before starting another relationship.

@futurebird @michaelgemar The lone star is a review.

@NYSloth @michaelgemar

shhhhh. we do not talk about that... keep your voice low. texas just needs... just leave it alone OK?

don't mess with texas please...

@NYSloth @futurebird That’s a good one!
@michaelgemar @futurebird Not original to me. The source has long disappeared from my memory, alas.

@futurebird the sanitation department having "Don't mess with New York" is one of the most New York things* I've ever seen

*based on my perception of it from American media as an Eastern European lol

@hazelnot

Sometimes we really are "like that"
