As a networking noob I find OPNSense soooo much easier to use than pfSense.

I recently switched over to OPNSense and I was dreading having to recreate my DNS over TLS settings and ad blocking lists.

Turns out it was so easy and it didn't require any plugins. If settings in pfSense are sprinkled in 5 different sections, in OPNSense are grouped logically, making things so much easier to configure.

@hmiron Also, you're now using a router OS that has NOT been forced to relinquish a domain used to disparage another router OS, which IMO is also a huge win!
@nanianmichaels Sorry, I'm not sure I follow.

@hmiron Kind of a long read, because there's a long story of how PfSense tried to screw OPNSense over, but here you go: https://www.xda-developers.com/why-use-opnsense-over-pfsense-dont-trust-netgate/

Long story short, when it comes to the site specifically, PfSense registered opnsense.com and used it to badmouth OPNSense, and to put an end to those shenanigans, OPNSense had to litigate.

Why I use OPNsense over pfSense, and why I don't trust Netgate at all

Both platforms have their uses, but Netgate has a lot of controversial history.

@nanianmichaels wow, I can't believe I didn't know about this. Thanks
@hmiron I've been thinking of moving to OPNSense from pfSense for a while but in a similar vein, I'm dreading moving 10+ years of config. Probably wishful thinking but is there a way to import and convert config in some way?

@pete I don't know if there is any kind of import, sorry.

What could 10 years of config translate to in reality? Perhaps you can just index some of the main things you need to recreate and start over. 🤷‍♂️

@hmiron I might just spin up a VM and start porting settings across bit by bit. Then I'm guessing I can export them to physical hardware when I'm ready.
@hmiron yet there is still a lot of room for improvement.
I struggled to configure IPv6 correctly because of poorly configured defaults.

@hmiron
Hi i was wondering if you could help another noob understand the verification instructions in the opensense installation documents, the second bit of code doesnt output anything fr me 🥲

Do you know of anyone I could ask for help?
