This is one of the many bird-planted chokecherry trees in the understory of the forest out back. Native prunus are one of the best species for wildlife around here. Tell a chokecherry that you love them today

I'm split between chokecherry and black cherry. Both great trees, wildly different mature size lol
@CedarTea Thanks for weighing in!! A friend had thought (also just based on photos) it might be prunus padus, which would not be ideal, but I'd happily take either chokecherry or black cherry! There's an old apple tree in the yard that's nearing the end of its life, so a proper tree size wouldn't be a bad thing...

I don't have experience with padus, so don't trust my word, but it looks native to me.
