Looking for how to shake up job placements, Labor turns to … John Howard

Labor had an opportunity to do what it said it would do in opposition and address Australia’s unfair and punitive mutual obligations system. But instead of brave reform, it announced a tiered system that divides up obligations depending on how ready the state thinks you are for work.

The Point

@MsDropbear42

anyone who thinks “they” (insert marginal label of your choice) are cheating on the dole has no idea how hard it is to
a) get the pittance
b) live on it

@maudenificent @MsDropbear42 I worked at Centrelink in the 90s, IIRC you had to be an Australian resident to get the dole.

There was an exemption for people who came to Australia under some specific visa categories - if someone was here under one of those visa categories they did not have to meet the residency requirement.

IMHO, the eligibility should be extended, not limited to only citizens (as WellDone Angus suggested). Also, they should raise the rate & abolish the punitive job network system.

@Kyna @maudenificent @MsDropbear42 I never understood the need of certain class of individuals to make vulnerable people even more vulnerable by denying them basic assistance. Ie #Robodebt and the Job network.
