Starting a new thread with photos from #NineMileCanyon in #Utah.

This is one of the most concentrated collections of #RockArt in the US. Mostly pecked #Petroglyphs that are from 800 to 200 years old, with a few red painted #Pictographs mixed in.

Note there is a new problem with #vandalism to these important artifacts. 🙁 Everyone should work to protect them!

#NineMileCanyon "Coyote Placing the Stars" #Petroglyphs

Coyote Placing the Stars covers several vertical surfaes about 100 ft up from the roadway. This is the only #NorthAmerican #RockArt I'm aware of with a direct link to popular #NativeAmerican folklore. There are several versions of this story. Signs at the site indicated the stars fell down and #Coyote placed them back in the sky. Another version says he only re-arranged the stars, placing them into constellations representing his fellow animals.

Note the anthropomorphic figure with a dog shaped head. Also note the grids of small circles representing fields of stars.
