Translating the New Testament from Greek and Aramaic, the original languages in which it was written, into Latin was a-okay but translating Latin into English was bad?

Have you toured The Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome? They have dead popes in glass boxes on display like the Soviets displayed the body of Lenin. Apparently these were naughty popes who don't get to join the good popes in the cellar until enough folks have prayed some more for their salvation. As an atheistic Protestant I didn't take this seriously and so didn't pay as much attention as I should have, so I may have a slightly distorted view.
