The lead developer of Claude Code hasn’t handwritten code in 6 months and believes software engineering as a discipline will disappear. It will be replaced by builders as PMs, designers and managers can use AI to code.

He believes we’ll see 100x more builders than we saw software engineers.

I liken this to how smartphones mean we may have fewer professional photographers or videographers but millions more people making their living with photos and videos they’ve taken.

Claude Code's creator on the end of the software engineer

Anthropic's Boris Cherny tells me major job loss due to automation really is coming — but job creation is, too. PLUS: the Pope's AI encyclical, and Trump abandons an AI executive order

@carnage4life Are there 100x more people who need bespoke software written? Is the idea every task software could be applied to is handled by one-off disposable apps written from a verbal spec and nothing is re-used or maintained?

@carnage4life
What is particularly wild to me is the implication that for every software engineer currently working there are 99 other people capable of discerning and specifying the requirements of an informational task precisely enough to produce software to do it, and the only obstacle to them writing software themselves up to now was something to do with typing it in?

Without being any meaner than necessary, that … has not been my experience.

@petealexharris I see this happening with my own eyes everyday at work. The bar for what it means to build software or even what you’d describe as software has moved.

I do a lot of custom workflow automation in my day job and see people who do the same. This is the sort of things that were custom PERL scripts or internal CRUD apps that are now just asking Claude to do the work or build a one off solution.

@carnage4life
But despite different tools being favoured to get it done, is there really 100x as much of it, or 100x as many people doing it? That's the bit I find extremely doubtful.
@petealexharris @carnage4life yeah, i think a lot of people will replace ill fitting saas solutions with one off llm coded apps. Basically how people used to use excel everywhere they will start using llm build apps everywhere
