An excellent example of this practice. This is how the pilcrow lost out to the indented paragraph, too.

@shadychars Well, to be fair, it didn't just lose out to the indent, it lost out to the concept of a new paragraph starting on a new line.

When your text is all smashed up together, a pilcrow is necessary.

@Axomamma Right - although when scribes / printers started putting paragraphs on new lines, they would often leave an indent for a pilcrow which then sometimes went unfilled. The two practices were linked.
