Putting together a compilation of short stories by Catherine Louisa Pirkis (of Loveday Brooke, Lady Detective fame) and I really love this archaeology part.

I’ve already transcribed 2–3 shorts from 1870s magazine scans that aren’t on her Wikipedia page. But there’s a novella called “Trooping with Crows” with no public scans available. Luckily you can pay British Library to digitise books from their collection, so #standardEbooks will have the first publication since 1880 (for free of course).

Scans received from the British Library, and uploaded to archive.org: https://archive.org/details/12641-cc-26-001

Now to transcribe and markup.

No idea when it was that anyone last read “Trooping with Crows” but it must have been years if not decades. It turned out to be a novella about a strong young Victorian woman falling into an unsuitable relationship despite the best efforts of her aunts. Fairly typical Pirkis fare but well written and paced, and with a selection of dogs as per usual.
