We're talking about "seekers" at Writing the Occult this Saturday - but what on earth is a "seeker" when it's at home?! This week we'll explore a few of the investigator types you'll find haunting your speculative fiction.

Next up is the humble occult detective.

A mainstay of literary fiction with a long and storied history, these guys are just like any other detectives - except they investigate the supernatural. Maybe they even have supernatural powers themselves? Think characters like Van Helsing from Dracula, Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently, or even Dennis Wheatley's Neils Orsen.

In pop culture, you'll find them in TV and film based on some of the more enduring occult detective fiction, as well as from graphic novels (hello, Constantine and Hellblazer), or as off-shoots from other properties (Angel, anyone?).

Many of us, of course, grew up on those famed supernatural detectives: the Scooby Gang! Roaming the streets in the Mystery Machine, those pesky kids went around investigating the strange and paranormal before unmasking the real culprit, usually some evil corporate trying to get things cheap. If you love a bit o' Scoob, we highly recommend checking out Mark Norman's book Zoinks! The Spooky Folklore Behind Scooby-Doo.
