Happy #DraculaDay ! Years ago on a trip to Toronto, I visited the public library's Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation & Fantasy. First thing I asked to see was their first edition of Dracula. The librarian said, "of course, but I warn you that it is disappointing". Somehow for me it only adds to the charm of this hot mess of a book that the original cover was mustard yellow
@beandreams I once read there was an (pre-print?) edition that claimed doggedly it was a True Story complete with urban legend-like pinnings to preceding events (real or imagined)...
@androcat That would not surprise me at all, I love it. I kind of feel like the Dracula fan fic started before the "official" version even got published

@beandreams

Found it, apparently Stoker wrote a Dracula fanfic (i.e. a different edition) which was translated direct to Icelandic - a sexier, more scandalous work, which insisted on being a really real :D https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/icelandic-translation-dracula-actually-different-book-180963346/

The Icelandic Translation of 'Dracula' Is Actually a Different Book

The mysteries of this Gothic classic aren't over yet

@androcat Powers of Darkness! Ha ha I have read this-- it's partly based on an earlier Stoker work and other sources but a lot of it is the Icelandic author's own additions. Dracula gets a niece if I recall? My review is: needlessly heterosexual 😂

@beandreams

"hot mess of a book" thank you. I tried reading this and OMG. I mean, if I lived back in a time without radio and TV I'd be desperate for any entertainment? sure, why not.
